Why I Left Knighthood to Become a Prompt Engineer

A snail jousteth with a robot. The snail is winning.

For eleven years I served the Crown with lance and shield. I slew four dragons, two of which were actually large lizards, and one of which was my cousin Gerald in a costume. And yet, I felt unfulfilled. Something was missing. That something, I now know, was a standing desk.¹

One night, beneath a full moon, a wandering monk handed me a glowing slab of glass and said, “Ask it anything.” I asked it how to slay a dragon. It gave me seven bullet points and a summary. I wept. I had never felt so seen.

Now I spend my days whispering to the slab in the old tongue. I have learned that the dragon must be addressed politely, that thou must “think step by step,” and that the slab, much like my former liege, will confidently tell thee things that are not true. In this way, little hath changed.

Do I miss the battlefield? Sometimes. But the synergy here is unmatched,² and on Fridays they bring in a jester for “team building.”
